Helen Zuskina (b. 1974, Ukraine) is a self-taught contemporary artist living and working in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Her artistic journey is rooted in intuition, daily practice, and a close attention to inner experience. In the summer of 2025, she fully devoted herself to painting, making it a natural and essential part of her everyday life.
Zuskina paints every day, approaching the act of painting as a space for observation, freedom, and inner dialogue. Her abstract works emerge through a direct encounter with color and material. There is no predetermined subject; instead, each composition gradually reveals itself through impulse, sensation, chance, and conscious choice.
For Zuskina, color is more than a visual element — it becomes a language of emotion, capable of expressing what cannot always be put into words.
Her practice is centered on acrylic and mixed media, combining traditional art materials with varied textures and experimental techniques.
She is particularly drawn to large-scale canvases, which allow her to move freely within the space of the painting and become deeply immersed in the creative process. At the same time, her smaller works retain the same emotional intensity and sensitivity to detail.
Zuskina seeks to create paintings that continue to live beyond the moment of their creation — changing with light, space, and the viewer’s gaze, and becoming part of a personal experience. Her work invites a quiet encounter with color, texture, and feeling, leaving room for each viewer to discover something of their own within the abstract.
Her near-term plans include creating a series of large-scale paintings and participating in international exhibitions and art fairs.
Artist statement
Helen Zuskina’s artistic journey has grown not from academic training, but from an inner need to create. Her interest in art began in childhood and, despite taking other directions in life, never disappeared. Over the years, she explored color, form, and space through her interest in interior design, gradually developing her own visual sensibility.
Today, painting is a space of freedom, intuition, and discovery for Zuskina. She does not seek to define an image or subject in advance. A work develops directly through the process: color creates movement, texture shifts the direction of the composition, and an unexpected mark can become an essential part of the painting. She approaches this process as a dialogue between her inner state and the physical surface of the work.
At the heart of her practice is abstraction as a language capable of expressing what cannot always be articulated in words. Zuskina is drawn to emotional states, energy, silence, tension, memory, and the perception of space. In her work, color functions not only as a visual element but also as a carrier of feeling. Texture gives the painting a physical presence, while composition establishes a rhythm in which movement and pause, density and air, impulse and balance come into dialogue.
Zuskina consciously preserves an element of unpredictability in her practice. Rather than attempting to control the outcome completely, she allows the material and the process itself to influence the evolution of each work. As a result, every painting gradually develops its own character and inner energy — an unrepeatable surge of emotion and inspiration that can never be recreated in exactly the same way.
Her artistic aim is to show that abstraction can be much more than decoration. For Zuskina, it is a living form of emotional experience — one capable of inspiring, creating a sense of harmony, and transforming the perception of a space. Her deep love for abstraction is reflected in her desire to create works that do more than simply exist within an interior. They bring individuality, refinement, and depth to contemporary, light-filled spaces.
Her visual thinking is strongly influenced by contemporary architecture and interior spaces — their light, proportions, openness, and restrained expressiveness. Yet her paintings are not intended simply to complement an interior. Zuskina seeks to create works that can alter the emotional atmosphere of a space and enter into an individual dialogue with the viewer.
For her, abstraction is not a predetermined answer, but an open space for feeling, memory, and personal interpretation.
